Pros & Cons

  • White & Case offers access to market-leading and high profile matters, the ability to work with high-quality people, and the opportunity to undertake rotations throughout different practice areas both domestically and internationally. The firm also has fantastic back office support in terms of practice assistants, IT, business development, and training sessions.
  • The access to partners and experienced lawyers that have time to give to help you learn and the range of interesting and complex deals that you get to work on.
  • The culture and teams at White & Case are incredibly supportive, and rather that feeling like one of the graduates, you're instead treated like a fully-fledged member of the team. Tied to that is the support, emphasis on development and focus on career progression that colleagues at every level will help you with.
  • Great people, small office and ability to get to know everyone, collegiate atmosphere, opportunities (international and local secondments), opportunity to take responsibility and learn quickly.
  • Excellent international opportunities, and learning from lawyers who are both at the top of their field and also very friendly and there to help you learn.
  • High pressure on graduates to understand and manage complex transactions and an expectation that you can work alone progressing deals which may prove challenging to those new to corporate life.
  • Stressful trying to learn and work quickly in a high-pressure environment; long/inconsistent working hours.
  • Working in teams that are leaner and small can mean that sometimes you're thrown into the deep end with work - which can be scary. At the same time though, this provides huge development and learning opportunities.
  • The firm's Australian practice is narrowly focused on projects. As such, sometimes the work can feel a little one-note. If your heart is set on some other practice area or industry, this firm might not be the one for you.
  • Unpredictability - this is something you cannot control as a junior working in a cyclical commercial law environment.

Career Prospects
The teams are quite lean, which could be advantageous in the sense that you have a lot of responsibility and do not have to fight for work. Also moving overseas within the network appears relatively easier than other firms.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility
Lots of pro bono opportunities - both domestic and international. For example, a partnership with Justice Connect's Domestic Building Legal Service to provide advice as volunteer lawyers (which I have assisted with personally).

Culture

Culture
The firm has a non-hierarchical culture with a welcoming communal lunch space. I feel comfortable knocking on anyone's door and asking questions. After hours, there are lots of social events including happy hour drinks most Fridays and once a month firm drinks organised by the grads.

The firm is very diverse, and I have colleagues from all different nationalities, ethnicities, and genders. Everyone is very respectful of one another, and I've never once felt out of place because of my background.

There's a huge variety of work, and generally, you'll be really involved in the matters you work on, which extends to attending meetings/calls and having direct contact with clients.

My managers are always very accessible and willing to take the time to discuss anything that arises. I've never felt uncomfortable approaching them. The firm is great at consistently communicating internal developments and recognising people for their achievements.

Office Work Environment
The firm's office is in a prime location and surrounded by other well-regarded companies. The office has a sleek, modern design with adjustable height desks, ample room for each person to work, and large spaces for people to collaborate with each other. The kitchen area is superb and the coffee machine is the best that I've seen in any place I've ever worked. The firm's building has change rooms available for those who might want to run or bike to work, and then shower and get changed afterwards. The dress code is business casual, and there is no need to wear formal attire, except if you choose. I've never once felt out of place for wearing comfortable clothes.

Recruitment

Recruitment
The interview process was very straightforward and sincere. The first and second-round interviews were one-on-one with either a Senior Associate, Counsel, or Partner. There weren't any trick questions. Instead, it was a very genuine conversation about your work and educational background, and why you were interested in the firm. The interviewers all seemed genuinely interested in me and were very respectful of my past endeavours and accomplishments. The firm was very flexible in arranging times for interviews, and also connected us with recent graduates so that we could reach out to them with any questions we had during the interview process.

Salary

Salary
It's close to the top of the market in Australia which is great, and the bonus structure is very transparent and clear. The problem isn't with the firm but with the Australian market - pay in Australia is amongst the lowest in developed jurisdictions around the world.

Training

Training
Solid training program - the firm is active with staying on top of changes to the law and supporting new grads with learning the tools to help them do their job more efficiently.

Work Hours
I've never felt pressure to stay unreasonably late on a consistent basis in order to get work done. Everyone in the team is conscious of everyone else's health and well-being, and if you do feel swamped with work, senior personnel are always very approachable and willing to help properly manage workflows. Having said that, if you do want to work long hours, there is more than enough work for you to do if you choose. It's really up to you to decide what kind of career you want.
