The ThoughtWorks story

We're an amazing collection of humans, hired for our passion, integrity and special powers. The company was founded as a social experiment – what happens when you hire really smart, passionate people and set them loose on really tough problems? More than 25 years on, this collection of people has helped shape the IT industry.

It's not that straightforward though. If you ask anyone who works here what we do, they'll give you a different answer. ThoughtWorks is very much what you make of it, and your experience will be shaped by the projects you're on and the people you work with.

It doesn't matter what your background is, ThoughtWorkers have diverse backgrounds and come from all walks of life.  All you need is love for technology and a passion for learning. Our entry-level program embraces trainees from university or those who are after a career change!

The culture

While lots of businesses trumpet diversity, ThoughtWorks is evangelical about it. Part of its corporate manifesto is: “Appearances and backgrounds aren’t important to us... We abhor and reject discrimination and inequality and promote diversity in all its forms. We proudly, passionately and actively strive to make both ThoughtWorks and our industry more reflective and inclusive of the society that we serve.”

In the five years to 2015 ThoughtWorks almost doubled the number of its female employees in tech roles from 17 to 32 per cent. In Australia, the company has a policy requiring half of all hires to be women. It also conducts regular reviews to ensure those women are receiving the same pay and career opportunities as their male counterparts. The company has won awards for being a great place to work for women and minorities, as well as individuals from any background.

Social Change

Striving for positive social change is at the heart of our purpose, culture and work.

Everyone at ThoughtWorks plays a part in our commitment to social justice. We have created an environment where people can learn and challenge themselves. We also facilitate and encourage complex conversations that advance our understanding of social justice and the societal implications of technology, and inspire us to action. Not everyone here is an activist, of course! But we believe in being open-minded, intolerant of intolerance and supportive of those less fortunate than us. We are, as a community and as individuals, aware of our privilege and seek to use it to help others.

The recruitment process

  • Online application (CV & Cover Letter)
  • Chat with our Recruiter to find out more about ThoughtWorks & TWU. Chat about career aspirations, their interest in consulting and becoming a ThoughtWorker
  • Online assessment (90min) This is a technical assessment for Developers.
  • Pairing Session (1 hour) Meet with 2 ThoughtWorkers in a paired programming session. It's a chance to experience day in the life of a Developer, working on a given problem with a team. It's an opportunity to share ideas and for everyone to learn something new.
  • Cultural conversation (1 hour) Chat about their values and beliefs, how this aligns with ThoughtWorks.
  • Presentation (30min) We'll give you a topic to prepare a presentation on. It's a chance for us to get to know you more, learn about your experience, communication and ways of collaboration.

Remuneration

Grad salaries are as per industry standard however there are some noteworthy benefits. On top of their initial five weeks of paid training in India or China, staff receive $2500 and two training days off each year to improve their skill set. There is also a wellness budget, book/ publication allowance and monthly phone and internet allowance.

Offices have a well stocked kitchen, catered Friday lunches, team away days. Additionally there are plenty of opportunities for interstate and international assignments.

Career prospects

ThoughtWorks has a flat structure and it’s not a place where ruthless personal ambition is rewarded. It’s easy to move sideways into different roles and expand your skillset. However, working out how to move upwards is more complicated. You’ll need to balance being driven with not being a jerk if you wish to advance.

The vibe of the place

If you're after a conventional employer, ThoughtWorks is definitely not for you. If you want to work in an egalitarian, diverse and sociable workplace crammed full of techno-utopians, you’ll be in heaven.
